Putting our new Programmable Cutting Rig through its paces at RGL HQ
It’s been an interesting week at RGL HQ as we made good use of our recently updated R&D workshop.
We’ve built a fully programmable, laptop-controlled cutting rig that allows us to run precise trials both above and below the waterline in our purpose-built test tank.
The goal? To prove we can cleanly cut through steel tubes while causing less damage to the structure behind them, something the industry often asks for in decommissioning and repair scenarios.
Early results are extremely promising: when the optimal speed and pressure were achieved, the cuts were clean, we had significantly reduced back-wall contact, and best of all, the data is fully repeatable and trustworthy.
The photo shows the cutting head just before it made the first automated cut of the tube. More footage and back-story coming as soon as we have fully analysed the data.
