Surface Preparation - Concrete

Creating a sound base to build on.

The cleanliness and condition of a concrete surface is of key importance to ensure durability and adhesion before any new coating or repair can be over applied.

RGL offer surface preparation of concrete using 40,000 PSI ultra-high-pressure water jets. A non-destructive solution, UHP water jetting for avoids damage / shock to surrounding areas caused by percussive alternatives and removes contaminants and non-visible chemicals like chlorides to promote better bonding with new concrete. The versatility of our robots makes our solution ideal to be used on tank walls, roofs, floors, bridge decks, tunnels and other structures to provide a clean dust-free, bare metal or exposed aggregate finish.

UHP Water Jetting is typically used on large areas of concrete to scabble or prepare the surface for over coating. Wherever possible, we use our Limpet blast head which incorporates powerful vacuum recovery of both wastewater and debris. It can be used on structures such as bridge decks and tunnels providing a clean dust free finish and without any percussive vibration associated with mechanical preparation techniques.

Create the perfect key.

A Scabbled finish achieved with water jetting is perfect for laying new concrete, or coating (such as waterproofing) Nearly all non-visual chemical traces and debris are removed as part of the hydro-blasting process leaving an ideal surface for over coating.

Benefits

The benefits of concrete surface preparation with ultra-high-pressure water jetting are:

  • Operatives are situated away from the workface.
  • Vibration free method.
  • Remote control.
  • No requirement for a fully enclosed working area.
  • Noise reduction (as shown) to such a level that no hearing protection is required for members of the public.
  • Local containment and management of resultant debris and wastewater.
  • Consistent / uniform finish.

Norwegian Highways Agency - Hydrodemolition of Underwater Bridge Pillars

When RGL used hydrodemolition techniques to undertake surface preparation on a bridge pillars in Norway; they generated significant cost savings and improved safety by eliminating the need for operatives to enter the water.
