Concrete and Steel Surface Preparation and Coatings Removal

Concrete and Steel Surface Preparation (HYDROBLASTING) using  UHP WATER JETTING FOR COATINGS REMOVAL

RGL have developed remotely controlled surface preparation machinery for specific applications on both steel and concrete in an effort to minimise the amount of “hand held lance” work required to successfully prepare a surface for re-coating.

Concrete Surface Preparation and Scabbling

UHP Water Jetting is typically used on large areas of concrete to scabble or prepare the surface for over coating. Wherever possible, we use our Limpet blast head which incorporates powerful vacuum recovery of both waste water and debris. It can be used on structures such as; bridge decks and tunnels providing a clean dust free finish and without any percussive vibration associated with mechanical preparation techniques.

The concrete surface preparation standard achieved with water jetting is perfect for laying new concrete, or coating (such as waterproofing) Nearly all non-visual chemical traces and debris are removed as part of the hydro-blasting process leaving an ideal surface for over coating.

Various degrees of profile can be achieved, depending on site specific requirements and the type of substrate being treated. Profile can be varied from 1-2 mm up to heavy scabble of over 25mm.

This system uses no abrasive and thus minimises costly disposal of waste arisings. Small areas, corners and edges are often treated using a hand held safety lance by a skilled operator. Water jets are vibration free, thus hazards associated with HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration) are eliminated.

UHP water jets are proven to be excellent at removing paint, rust, bitumen, epoxies and other coatings from almost any surface. The process does not cause damage to the underlying material or generate any heat, sparks dust or vibration.

STEEL SURFACE PREPARATION

The “Limpet” – A remotely controlled  machine which adheres to the surface being prepared by suction. This principle of operation has earned the machine the nick name of  “Limpet” which has been deployed on many projects where a fast, safe, clean and effective coating removal system has been required over a large surface area. This hydraulically driven machine is equipped with a set of rotating jets. The jets “hybroblast” the surface with Ultra high pressure water which removes any coating or covering. The vacuum system not only holds the machine to the surface but also serves as a water and debris collection system.

The “Rover” – A similar machine to the limpet but equipped with 4 wheels as opposed to a suction skirt and is ideal for horizontal surfaces like tanks roofs and floors. . This machine was originally designed to remove insulation from a steel tank roof which was deemed unfit for people to walk on and needed to be inspected. Our brief was to remove the insulation remotely to facilitate this inspection. As with the limpet, a vacuum system collects the water and debris.

In most cases, Hydro blasting of steel offers a cheaper, safer and more cost-effective alternative to dry abrasive blast cleaning or mechanical surface preparation methods. The machines are self-supporting and can be remotely operated from a “cherry picker” therefore; do not require scaffolding. This technique is abrasive free and thus avoids waste disposal costs associated with Abrasive Blast Cleaning.
