Planned upgrades/ maintenance

When it comes to high profile utility type projects we fully understand the challenges faced by project managers in implementing a series of critical upgrade or maintenance tasks within very tight timescales. As these projects are typically planned well in advance, you can rely on RGL’s project managers to fully establish your requirements at an early stage in order to guarantee the deployment of appropriate crew, plant and equipment and get the work completed within agreed timescales.

Emergency solutions

Despite your best efforts, regular maintenance routines may not always be sufficient to prevent unexpected process failures– and for which retained service suppliers cannot offer viable solutions. You can rely on RGL to make our crews available at short notice to speedily and efficiently devise and implement solutions to overcome even the most technical challenges.

We understand that our specialist water jetting services are often just part of a wider maintenance or upgrade process in which critical tasks have to be completed on time – especially where outages have to be kept to an absolute minimum. You can rely on RGL to undertake an in-depth assessment of each task which identifies service solutions and risks. This involves preparing site survey reports, undertaking trials, work sequencing and preparation of method statements so that you can have full confidence that our proposals will achieve exactly what you require. This is backed up with robust site safety, quality and environmental plans to meet your specification. Our Health, Safety and Environmental Policies are also reviewed and re issued regularly, thus maintaining our drive for continued improvement in this critical area.


Management of the project environment

Whether it’s water availability, site access, noise, waste handling, site safety, day or night working you can rely on RGL to successfully and concisely manage the project environment. We are particularly sensitive to the demands of working in utility environments such as nuclear, marine or clean water sites. All our processes have low environmental impact. For example, during our cold cutting process we use an inert rock. During our concrete hydrodemolition process we can return treated waste water to the environment. All our water Jetting Pump units are fitted with the latest efficient engines. In addition, our ultra high pressure, low flow cutting methods use up to 50% less water than most of our competitors on like for like tasks.


Expert crews and top spec equipment

We probably have the most experienced, productive crews in the UK. Our crews can expertly utilise remote control semi automatic equipment or Low reaction Force hand held safety lances for precision cutting or cleaning. These are linked to trailer or truck mounted pumps with an output range of 20-250 litres per minute and pressure up to 3000 bar. The combination of expertise and controlled power delivers high levels of efficiency and productivity.

Innovative plant and equipment

RGL is at the forefront of developing innovative ultra high pressure water jet cutting and cleaning services which deliver practical, effective, safe solutions for the utilities and power generation sector:

Boiler cleaning

RGL have developed remote control semi-automatic jetting equipment to quickly and effectively remove compacted ash from between tube banks in Economisers and in Primary and Secondary Super Heaters. Our system returns tube surfaces to near perfectly clean condition which means we restore optimum heat transfer/boiler efficiency.

Concrete hydrodemolition

We are one of the few service companies that undertake hydrodemolition with ultra high pressure water. This delivers precision cutting to any depth within very tight tolerances – and reinforcing steel can be either left undamaged or cut /removed if required. The remaining structure retains its original integrity without suffering any damage or cracking. Concrete and steel surfaces are left ready for subsequent repair works. This process is also vibration free which means that delicate plant and equipment and critical structural concrete elements are left undamaged.

Cold cutting

We use ultra high pressure water jets, combined with a fine abrasive to cut almost any material without creating heat or sparks. This process is ideal for cutting into tanks or pipes that may contain volatile gas or liquid. This is a very versatile cutting tool which is operated in a remote control manner. The equipment is portable and also works under water. It is particularly effective at cutting steels and cast iron.

Coatings removal and surface preparation

On storage tanks and other steel structures RGL can remove coatings by hand held lances or by automated methods.

For flat surfaces such as oil or gas storage tanks we offer a cheaper, safer and more effective alternative to open abrasive blast cleaning. Our UHP “Limpet Crawler System” is an effective method of removing paint and rust which is zone rated and avoids the need for expensive scaffolding or sheeting. Furthermore, the in-built high power vacuum removes the water and waste which are then separated through a filtration system. All arisings are captured and the surface is left warm and dry.

Refractory lining removal

We have successfully developed and proved a new method of removing refractory lining material using a remote controlled Hydrodemolition process. This means we avoid many of the health and safety issues associated with men working in confined spaces – it also avoids the HAVS issues that occur through the use of jackhammers. There is no percussive impact, which means that delicate boiler tubes/water walls are left undamaged.

Process pipeline cleaning

Our Rotoream system is an innovative method for process pipeline cleaning which can navigate long lengths and multiple bends. It uses a rotating nozzle attached to a high pressure hose. This system unblocks and flushes as it cuts, allowing removal of various substances such a slurry, rust, lime scale, cementitious lining, marine growth or failed protective coatings. The system is capable of cleaning pipes over 1KM in length.

Tube cleaning

Heat exchangers in power stations often require regularnunblocking or de-scaling, but this can sometimes be beyond the capabilities of routine maintenance methods. RGL have an extensive range of equipment which enable us to tackle almost any heat exchanger tube cleaning task – we can unblock tubes that are choked with even the hardest materials and polish the tubes ready for IRIS inspection. We tackle the challenges using portable semi-automatic equipment which can be deployed onto the plant and into areas with restricted access. These ‘in situ’ tube cleaning jobs which may be at a high level can be undertaken swiftly and safely.


Minimal breakdowns

RGL directly employ a full time maintenance team to ensure our equipment is meticulously prepared for each use. We have a programme of scheduled preventative maintenance which means that we are able to change out components before they fail and cause delays. Our team also ensure routine servicing to manufacturer’s recommendations is undertaken to engines, pumps and all ancillary equipment.

All equipment is pre-delivery inspected and tested to full working pressure prior to every new job start. Records are meticulously kept of maintenance tasks undertaken. This focus on maintenance helps us minimise breakdowns by continuous improvement and thus enables us to ensure we deliver our projects for our customers without programme slippage during critical outage periods.
